Acrylic acid - acroleic acid:

Acrylic acid or acroleic acid or prop-2-enoic acid is an organic compound of formula C3H4O2 and of semi-developed formula CH2 = CHCOOH. It is a carboxylic acid and a vinyl alkene, and is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor.

Uses of acrylic acid:

Acrylic acid and its esters, acrylates, are used in the manufacture of plastics, in acrylic paints and in various other polyacrylics which have multiple uses. Demand for acrylic acid has gradually increased from 3.2 million tonnes (2005) to approx. 5.57 million tonnes (2014).
Acrylic acid is produced from propylene, a by-product of petroleum refining. In the 1990s, a one-step propane oxidation process was used, using complicated catalytic compositions (ie Mo-W-Te-Sn-Co-O and Nb-W Co-Ni-Bi-Fe-Mn-Si-Zr-O).

Acrylic acid production steps:

Currently, a two-step process is used for the production of acrylic acid. In the first step, propene is oxidized to acrolein using bismuth molybdate catalysts.
In the second step, acrolein is further oxidized to acrylic acid with molybdenum and vanadium catalysts.

propane:

Due to the fact that propane is a raw material that is significantly less expensive than propylene, the one-step selective oxidation of propane to acrylic acid is currently under intensive investigation. A promising catalyst is Mo, V, Te and Nb, with a specific crystal structure.

The bulk structure of this catalyst is stable under an oxidizing and reducing gas composition. On the other hand, the surface composition and the catalytic properties change dynamically with the oxygen and vapor content of the reactive gas.
